More from the Barrel:
Rare Photographs and Documents

We are pleased to present here a selection of rare illustrations and other documentation pertaining to Greater Cincinnati breweries and their leading figures. Some of these images unfortunately arrived too late for inclusion in Volumes One and Two of Over the Barrel, while others are outtakes from the preparation of the books - items which did not make the final cut.

(Note: Many of these rarities are from private collections and archival holdings, and are used with the kind permission of their owners. Please respect their proprietary rights and refrain from copying/reposting/otherwise utilizing these images without contacting them first and obtaining their consent to do so.)

Check back soon for more of these special additions to the
Over the Barrel project. If you have interesting and unusual items that you would like to see posted here, contact the OTB Biermeister/web drone via e-mail (deutschmeister@charter.net) for electronic copy submission guidelines and other important information.

Greater Cincinnati Breweries at the Turn of the Century

The Bavarian Brewing Company (Covington, KY)

During the late nineteenth century, William Riedlin was instrumental in leading the Bavarian Brewing Company to become one of the largest breweries in Kentucky before Prohibition. The following items are from the collection of David White, great-great grandson of William Riedlin and a relative of the Schott family, which directed the brewery for two decades after repeal.

The Cincinnati Brewing Company (Hamilton, OH)

In the years before Prohibition, "Just Plain Uncle Peter" was the popular way to ask for product of the Cincinnati Brewing Company in its native Hamilton setting - in honor of brewery leader Peter Schwab. Below are two images from an 1899 mortgage release, showing that a creditor had paid off its obligation to the brewery in a timely manner. (author's collection)
